Breaking Free A Prose Piece of Fortitude and Passion free essay sample

Over the past couple of years, I have begun to realize that I am not ordinary. My mind is filled with complex thoughts that mark my behavior as that of a knowledge-seeker, and not a typical teenager. I seek solace in the works of Jane Austen, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Walt Whitman. English class is where I can let go of my tight breaths and exhale. I am free. My soul delves into a sea of beautiful words pieced together by creators and I welcome their thought-provoking challenges and life-altering questions. At the close of English 3 Honors, we studied various works of poetry ranging from Langston Hughes to Sylvia Plath. In the midst of everything, the words of Whitman sought their way to the curriculum. I was elated. Ever since my eyes beheld the inspiring film Dead Poets Society, my admiration of Whitman has expanded. My teacher informed us that we would have a Whitman assignment to complete over Memorial Day weekend: a mimetic poem of Whitmans style. Poetry should not be confined to a style or formula, I immediately thought. The entire class agreed. I had no choice, though, but to do the assignment. I procrastinated the entire weekend. It was already Memorial Day, and I thus had no choice but to bring my notebook and pencil with me to Central Park for the picnic my friends planned. We spent the entire day frolicking through the grass, playing Frisbee and eating juicy slices of watermelon. Exhausted from the springtime sun, I recall lying on a blanket and closing my eyes. Time passed slowly, and as my ears heard the mellifluous songs of Gods creatures, I became ready to write. Whitman is renown for his depiction of nature and real life urban scenes so I was in the perfectly inspiring spot. Then it happened. The laughter of children and the soft music of the birds were stifled by repulsive and debasing words. My moment was ruined. Two men approached our blankets and asked us if we would vote for them via text message for a rappers contest. I instantaneously felt uncomfortable and my entire deportment depicted this. A couple of my friends asked for a sample of their work. Their words pierced my ears and burned my heart. They were blatantly degrading women. I couldnt take it. I was not only aggravated that these two men ruined my solitude and peace, but they were discriminating the opposite sex, my sex! Some of my friends noticed that I wanted to say something. I was nervous. They encouraged me, and I spoke out against the present injustice. I told the men how degrading toward women their music is and how despicable they are for publicly rapping such profanity. I shortly thereafter cried. I think I was surprised at myself that I had the power to stand up for womankind. This uprising was the natural scene I needed to illustrate through poetry. I noticed I was forcing myself onto nature. Whitman wouldnt approve. Leaves of Grass is his, not mine. Standing up for equality is my forte. Although it conformed to the style of free verse, my poem was mine. It wasnt formulaic; it was my creation. I am the sculptor of words that will transform the world.

When Victor Frankenstein is describing the monsters ‘birth’ he tells us: it was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out† (Chapter V, pg 59) In a play, the scene will be set by a director. We take clues from the dialect regarding environment, â€Å"so foul and fair a day I have not seen† (I, 3, 36), we know the battle is won so foul must refer to the weather. Thoughts are conveyed through asides â€Å"Glamis, and Thane of Cawdor: The greatest is behind† (I, 3,115-116), Macbeth has thoughts which he cannot share with Banquo, but Shakespeare needs to make the point that the seed is planted. Another contrast between the two works is the date; In Elizabethan times the genre of horror was not referred to. The works of authors such as Shakespeare, Sackville, and Webster were referred to as ‘Tragedies’ although they had many gothic elements. They were based on history, mainly Greek mythology interesting to note as Shelley’s novel is based on the tale of Prometheus, the titan who was challenged by Zeus to form a man from clay, (Theoi Greek Mythology, 2010). The main ingredient of the gothic novel is the atmosphere of mystery and suspense. Shelley and Shakespeare use similar techniques to create this atmosphere. Shelley, writing in an age of discovery, uses the fear of the unknown; whereas Shakespeare bases Macbeth on the fear of the supernatural. Frankenstein was written in a time when scientists were going crazy in the quest to find answers to everything the concept of a mad scientist would not be so unbelievable. In the mid 1700’s Franklin discovered that lightening was electrical, Volta invented the battery in 1800 and in 1818 Blundell performed the first human blood transfusion (Bone, 2007) – three relevant discoveries that demonstrate the novels appeal. When Shakespeare wrote Macbeth human thinking was very different to today; every misfortune was blamed on supernatural forces, hence the popularity of superstition. There are many elements of superstition in Macbeth, including the owl, the raven and of course numerous references to the power of three three witches, three prophecies and the use of â€Å"thrice† in the witches incantations: â€Å" thrice to thine, and thrice to mine, and thrice again, to make up nine† (I, 3, 33-34). Shelley builds a fear of the unknown through vagueness in several parts of the story. When Walton describes his first encounter with the monster, â€Å"We perceived a low carriage, fixed on a sledge and drawn by dogs, pass on towards the North, but at the distance of half a mile: a being which had the shape of a man, but apparently of gigantic stature, sat in the sledge, and guided the dogs. We watched the rapid progress of the traveller with our telescopes, until he was lost among the distant inequalities of the ice† (Letter IV, pg 26) No explanation is given about where he came from or how he got there herefore we are forced to look at the implicitness of this inclusion. Walton then changes subject making the previous subject seem indifferent, however the reader is left wondering what unnatural event has been foreshadowed. In chapter four Victor tells Walton of his obsessive behaviour but will not divulge his secret, leaving the reader in as much suspense as Victor’s audience. â€Å"I see by your eagerness, and the wonder and hope which your eyes expr ess, my friend, that you expect to be informed of the secret with which I am acquainted; that cannot be† (Ch 4, pg 54) Like Shakespeare, Shelley uses elements of supernatural forces, the monster seems to appear from nowhere at various stages – always foreshadowing tragedy, much the same way as the witches do in Macbeth. She is keen to inform us that, unlike the characters in Macbeth, Victor is not affected by superstition, â€Å"I do not ever remember to have trembled at a tale of superstition, or to have feared the apparition of a spirit† (Ch 4, pg 53). This is a complete contrast to the eponymous hero in Shakespeare’s play. Macbeth is traumatised by the appearance of several apparitions including that of Banquo’s ghost: thou canst not say I did it; never shake thy gory locks at me! † (III, 4, 50-51). Although Shakespeare’s play is predominantly supernatural, Shelly focuses on the unnatural rather than supernatural. The very ‘birth’ of the monster is unnatural, but the same can be said of Macbeth, being born by caesarean section. Macbeth’s creation is completely natural and within Gods laws, in Shelley’s novel Victor is playing the role of God by creating a living being that is not conceived and nurtured in the womb. The monster although designed by Victor to be â€Å"beautiful† (Ch 5, pg 59) is actually quite the opposite: his yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; but these luxuriance’s only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight, black lips. †(Ch 5, pg 59) The imagery the reader conjures up is of a horrid, hideous zombie-like creature. The witches in Macbeth are also described as unnatural; What are these, so wither’d and wild in their attire,That they look not like th’inhabitants o’th’earthAnd yet are on’t ? Live you, or are you aughtThat man may question? † (I, 3, 37- 41) What both works definitely have in common is the element of madness brought on by ambition. However the subject of the ambition is a huge contrast; Frankenstein wishes to create a life, while Macbeth wishes to destroy a life. The reasoning for both is the same; they believe they are acting for the good of mankind; Macbeth believes that if the witches have proclaimed it then it must be so; the king’s murder is a necessity. Macbeth is an ambitious man who on hearing the witches prophecy, seeks the opinion of his wife and takes advantage of her ruthfulness. However after the murder, Macbeth becomes indifferent to his wife’s and determines to hold on to his greatness. He murders anyone who stands in his way, including children. Throughout the play hallucinations and apparitions haunt Macbeth, and we get a sense that his lack of sleep and his conscience are sending him mad. In Frankenstein, Victor is driven by his ambition to â€Å"banish disease from the human frame, and render man invulnerable to any but violent death! (Ch 2, pg 41). He becomes obsessed with his quest and like Macbeth his sleep suffers: â€Å"I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I had deprived myself of rest and health† (Ch 5, pg59) The main difference here is Frankenstein loses sleep prior to the event due to his obsession to reach his goal; Macbeth loses sleep after the event as a result of his conscience and paranoia: â€Å"sleep no more, Macbeth does murder sleep’, the innocent sleep† (II, 2, 38-39). Both works use many elements of gothic horror within their texts. Shelley’s Frankenstein also meets the criteria of the science fiction novel through its focus on fear of the unknown. Both have elements of stormy weather, settings within castles and macabre, explicit descriptions. The use of extreme emotion is apparent in both, with both Lady Macbeth and Victor fainting at crucial moments. Both protagonists attempt to play God, Frankenstein even acknowledges this, â€Å"A new species would bless me as its creator† (Ch 4, pg 54). The tragic hero is evident in both works both built up then brought down by a tragic flaw, their obsessive ambition. The tragic irony is that both can only be redeemed by their own deaths. Both works are didactic pieces, intended to make the reader take haste when pursuing unrealistic ambitions, as Walton does and abandons his quest. With its causes are variable and not exactly known,they are roughly related with the genetics,environmental effects,extraordinary conditions occuring during the development of brain.Psychological or medical treatments are available,of course,and former of which are usually the first choice while the latter is for more intense cases with heavier symptoms.Other treatments include academic, and behavioral interventions. 1.1: Hyperactivity and A.D.D. is a common seen case at people,starting from childhood.It is not a disease,it is defined as a behavioral disorder by the health experts,while the psychiatrists define it as a neurobehavioral developmental disorder. It should be noted that being Hyperactive does not mean being less qualified,insomuch that,considering most hyperactive people have higher IQ rates compared to other people.This means these individuals can be,and are actually as qualified and as intellectually potent as everyone,or even more.The purpose of this report is to analyze the reasons of the causes,symptoms,results and alike conditions that this disorder causes in the individuals lives. In order to examine the subject,it is first needed to be understood the reasons,types,their differences and specialties.Then it must be gone through the results and treatments.In addition,the patients with ADHD will be regarded as hyperactives or hyperactive individuals,during the rest of the report. 1.2: Being considered as a behavioral disorder by the health experts,ADHD is also defined as a neurobehavioral developmental disorder. It is a common disorder that starts during childhood,however,it does not only effect children.People of all ages can suffer from it,and backing that up,it is observed that the symptoms of ADHD keeps asserting themselves in the adolescense,too. ADHD makes certain things harder for the one who is bearing it,like making it more difficult to focus on things for a long time without distraction.Patients also struggle controlling what they are doing or saying,and also have harder time on controlling the frequency of their physical activities,compared to somebody without ADHD.To say in other words,hyperactive individuals are more impulsive and restless. Being in close relationship but not to confused with autism,there are other disorders it may be related to.Backing that up,ADHD is also associated with many other conditions including learning disabilities, conduct disorder, anxiety, mood, and substance abuse disorders. Some other trivial information about ADHD is that it is known and defined in different names by different experts or countries.For example,in North America the term ADD or ADHD is commonly used to express the situation,while in the UK Hyperkinetic Disorder (HKD) is the special term.Health experts may use one of the following,in order to specify those with disorder; attention deficit, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, hyperkinetic disorder, hyperactivity. 2.1 Types Symptoms There are three diagnosed types of ADHD so far,which are Predominantly Inattentive Type, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type and Combined Type.For any of them to be diagnosed certainly,patient must show at least 6 out of 9 of the symptoms which are specific to the each type: Predominantly Inattentive Type symptoms include: Not paying attention to detail Mistakes due to carelessness Failure to pay and keep attention on task Not listening Unability to follow and understand any instruction Avoiding effort involving tasks To be distracted a lot To forget things a lot Losing objects that are needfull to complete the tasks Hyperactive-Impulsive Type symptoms include: Fidgeting Squirming Getting up often when seated Heavy physical activity (running,climbing) in inappropriate times Having trouble playing or tasking quietly Talking excessively and impatiently Interrupting And as the name may suggest,combined type consists of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms.For a certain diagnosis,symptoms must be observed for a consistent six months,and to a greater degree than other children at the same age. 2.2: Results at Real Life Most people display some of these symptoms and behaviours,but it is not always to a degree where they interfere with their lives significantly.And due to this absence of significance,a diagnosis of ADHD is not precise and appropriate.Some people with ADHD experience considerable difficulties with social and academic skills,such as forming or keeping relationships or keeping proper work and attention during their careers.Moreover,most of the child patients experience rejection and exculsion by their peers,compared to 10-15 percent of the healthy children of the same age.A significant rate of adolescents are observed to have difficulties during the process of non-verbal and verbal communication. 2.3 Causes 2.3.1: Genetics Studies show that,in about 75 percent of the cases,genetics are a factor and the disorder is also highly heritable between ancestral genes or by the gene pool. 2.3.2: Executive Functions Significant amount of symptoms arise from a primary deficit on Executive Functions,which refers to cognitive processes that regulates and controls other cognitive processes.The most obvious examples of it are planning,working memory,attention,inhibition and mental flexibility. 2.3.3:Evolution For more than 1 percent of population,researchers stated that high generality of ADHD may be due to natural selection,probably because the individual traits might be beneficial on their own and only became dysfunctional where these traits combine to form ADHD. 2.3.4:Environment Environmental factors usually contribute a small role to the origins of ADHD.Exposure to tobacco smoke or alcohol intakes during the pregnancy may impair the development of nervous system which can end up with a diagnosis of ADHD.Environmental lead also remains as a valid factor,since former studies at relatively high levels of lead exposure showed that the exposure and low levels of IQ as well as attention problems,other disorders such as autism or hyperactivity. 3 Conclusion As a common case,hyperactivity has many effects on patients who bear it,though it does not pose serious threats or problems for health. It only could make life a little harder,in social and academic senses,but that does not mean that it is completely bad and hard to live with it.Majority of hyperactive individuals are reported and observed to have higher IQ levels and creativeness compared to those who arent.They also think and act differently,making them outstand from the crowd,usually in a good way. Commenting and acting differently when encountered extraordinary situations is mostly applauded by ordinary people,due they can and do come out with extraordinary but appropriate solutions. However,this little disorder can be treated and reduced,even though it can not be completely removed,but then again,since it does not have harmful effects on human health,it is not necessary.But then,having a more stable mind and physical stand and postur emay help individuals get more friends easily,acquire succesful relationships,and most important of all,a more succesful academic life,in senses of education and career. One should not simply stereotype or confuse hyperactive individuals with mental patients.It can be both a bless,and a curse,and it completely depends on the perspective.After all,they are just as human as we are,maybe a little more restless,reckless and impatient.But again,there is nothing wrong with standing out of the crowd,in a good way,and without even trying that hard as the rest of the other people. The computer chip is doing for today's knowledge economy what electricity did for our industrial economy a century ago. Synergies in technology are driving acceleration in productivity growth that enables us to grow faster with less inflation.
